Cranio-Sacral Therapy
Craniosacral Therapy
Overview
Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on alternative treatment. Practitioners use light touch to manipulate the skull, spine, and sacrum, aiming to release restrictions in the craniosacral system (brain, spinal cord, cerebrospinal fluid, and surrounding membranes).
History
Developed in the 1970s by osteopath John Upledger, based on William Sutherland’s earlier cranial osteopathy from the 1930s.
How It Works
Therapist palpates subtle rhythms (6-12 cycles/minute) in the craniosacral fluid. Light pressure (5 grams) corrects imbalances, supposedly improving central nervous system function.
Claimed Benefits
Relieves migraines, neck pain, TMJ disorders.
Reduces stress, anxiety, chronic fatigue.
Aids conditions like fibromyalgia, autism (unproven).
