Chiropractic Improves Depression

Overcoming depression and boosting your mood may be just a few chiropractic adjustments away.

According to an a November 2005 research article, 15 adults who were clinically diagnosed with depression and also suffered from upper cervical spinal misalignment were given chiropractic adjustments on three different occasions. Before and after the adjustments, each patient was given the Beck Depression Inventory test to determine their level of depression.

Results from the depression test show that patients experienced a significant reduction in feelings of depression.

This is great news, but what’s even better news is that chiropractic adjustments can do so much more than help people suffering from depression. Chiropractic adjustments help improve your body’s overall ability to fight off sickness and improve your quality of life.

Germs

True or false: when you come in contact with a germ, you’re bound to get sick from that particular germ.

While many people believe this statement to be true, the answer is actually false. Just because you make contact with a germ doesn’t mean you’ll get sick. The truth is that healthy people remain healthy when they contact a germ; it’s the unhealthy people who develop serious illnesses from germs.

The human body is not indestructible, and therefore very healthy people may develop a simple illness like the common cold, or perhaps the stomach flu, but rarely anything worse. People who are truly strong and healthy on the inside do not drop over dead from heart attacks or get cancer. Only people whose inner health has slowly deteriorated and whose resistance has become compromised get sick with serious illness.

Think about it like this—if the germ theory was true, no one who works in a hospital would be alive to talk about it. Doctors, nurses and health care workers come in contact with germs all the time, yet just the opposite occurs. They rarely get sick because their body’s resistance has been built up.

To compliment the germ theory, a new fear of germs has spread across the U.S.—it is called the “hygiene hypothesis” In a nut shell, the hygiene hypothesis tells us that we’re not safe from the illness caused by germs, therefore we must eliminate germs every chance we get. That’s why we’ve seen a dramatic rise in the use of antibacterial soaps and hand gels. As a theory, the idea sounds great, get rid of the germs before they get you. But in reality, just the opposite it true.

Everyone’s immune system needs exercise, or else is gets weak and becomes unable to fight off sickness. By creating sterile environments with antibacterial washes, sprays and cleaning agents, we’re making our immune systems lazy. Then, when a germ happens to sneak past our line of defense, its ability to make us sick increases dramatically because our immune system is too weak and out of shape to fight it off.

To prove this point, let’s look to the Amish community of America.

The Amish are comprised mainly of farmers who live in less than sterile conditions. They do not use vaccinations or medications of any kind. They don’t seek medical doctors, but believe in natural home remedies and chiropractors to keep their health in check. They eat fresh produce and get natural exercise from their active lifestyles. Many also interact with livestock on a daily basis and their children often get dirty playing on the farm. Yet, these people who come in contact with all sorts of germs everyday—and never visit medical doctors—have one of the healthiest track records in the world. Why? They’ve allowed themselves to be exposed to life and the germs that come with it. That exposure has exercised their immune systems so that they can withstand the sickness caused by germs.

It all boils down to this—don’t be afraid of germs. Instead, allow yourself to live a full and healthy life, and in the process eat lots of fresh produce and avoid processed foods. Exercise. And optimize your immune system by getting regularly scheduled chiropractic adjustments.

The Power of Forgiveness

People can become extremely ill when they choose to harbor feelings of bitterness, resentment and unforgiveness.

This is not just a Sunday school lesson; science is proving this to be a fact. When you choose to hold on to symptoms of unforgiveness, such as hatred, resentment, bitterness and regret, these feelings act like a poison that slowly eats away at your body, devouring your health. People who harbor unforgiveness within them often develop ulcers, high blood pressure, cancer, suffer strokes or even have heart attacks.

The good news is that when you choose to forgive someone, you’re not doing it for them; you’re doing it so that YOU can have a healthy life and move on.

Forgiving someone doesn’t mean that what they did was right, nor does it mean that you agree with their actions. Forgiveness means that you recognize that the other person or people have made a mistake and they can’t take it back. Forgiveness means that you love yourself enough to not want to be stuck living every day in that situation—in those feelings—so you forgive the mistake, let go of the situation, and move forward in living your life to the fullest.

Remember, whatever you are not willing to release will stay with you. And negative feelings associated with unforgiveness have the potential to wreak havoc on your health.

Live healthy. Forgive often.

Psychotherapractor

Today, a patient came in saying they felt no improvement- this had been their third visit. And now this person was afraid that since we had no improvement, and no improvement with the three other chiropractors, and half-dozen medical doctors visited, then this was hopeless.

Now, I don't think I am the greatest thing since sliced bread...but by the third visit, I definitely see improvements - Unless.... there is an underlying emotional component.

Now, I suspected this on the last visit, because this person reported no improvement at all. And I probably should have addressed it then, but didn't.

I asked this person some questions regarding stress in their life, and just listened. Most of the time, the patients will tell you the underlying cause if you just listen long enough. This person went on to tell me how the pain increased when they were feeling anger.

A-ha! The answer! After addressing this issue with questions, I got a rather big emotional release from them...and a decrease in the pain.

Pretty cool. There are some good books by Candace Pert- Molecules of Emotion and Your Body is your Subconscious Mind

Schedule Easier

We are trying to make things more convenient to our practice members by offering online scheduling. This feature will allow you to see our hours and schedule an appointment that fits your needs.

Right now we are testing-offering appointments only during the slow periods-I'm worried that since we see huge amount of walk-ins, this might mess up the works.

By the way, If you have not received our monthly newsletter, you can see it here.

Hot

It's hot. Georgia in August gets REALLY hot. I think this is how Georgia ranks in heat indexes:

1. The core of the sun
2. The seventh level of Hell
3. Georgia in August
I want some rain or something to cool us off. A/C doesn't seem to cool much off- It's HOT!

Guy night out

Last night a couple of friends and I had a guy's night out. We went to see the movie The Bourne Ultimatum-the movie was action-packed all the way through. It probably had the coolest car chase scene ever.

Normal

Yesterday, I was talking to a patient about what would be "normal" in a case like theirs-and after that this phrase kept popping into my mind:

"Normal is average!"

It's true: whenever you see "normal" it's the acceptable middle ground. While I'm far from being a revolutionary or anarchist, I don't want to be perceived as average- I don't think I am.

Do your best to be a little more outrageous-less average. It's more fun that way.

Artificial Sweetener Dangers

If you consume the artificial sweetener aspartame—also known by the brand names NutraSweet and Equal—you may be making a deadly mistake.

A recent study by the Ramazzini Foundation concluded that aspartame was directly related to an increased risk of developing leukemia, lymphoma and breast cancer.

In the study, rats were fed between 20 and 100 milligrams of aspartame per kilogram of body weight in order to mimic the amount of the sweetener some humans would consume. The lower dosage can be compared to a 50 lb child drinking 2.5 cans of Diet Pepsi or Diet Coke each day, and a 150 lb adult drinking 7.5 cans. The study found that even the rats fed the lower dose of aspartame were more prone to develop cancer.

Don’t think you’re off the hook because you only drink a couple diet beverages a day. Aspartame is also found in many other food products, such as sugar-free candy, chewing gum and dessert, instant breakfasts, wine coolers, yogurt, gelatin, juice beverages, and even over-the-counter and prescription drugs (listed under “inactive ingredients”).

Together, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), as well as a dozen toxicology and epidemiology experts, are asking the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to review the study and change aspartames safety rating.

Michael F. Jacobson, executive director of CSPI said that, “…consumers, particularly parents, shouldn’t wait for the FDA to act. People shouldn’t panic, but they should stop buying beverages and foods containing aspartame.”
